Master Suite: bed nook

bed-nook

Turns out, the master suite is taking as much time as the office to complete.  Inspired by Sadie Olive and Velvet & Linen I decided to go with a neutral palette.  Not too convenient since it was just painted a pretty shade of blue-green.  Honestly, though I love the colors,  I don’t like the set up so far. It looks disproportionate.  I need your help.  I need ideas.  I would love to get rid of the bed and find an antique headboard.  I think I need to paste more memories on the wall, those are ordered.  Perhaps a bench at the end of the bed?  Rugs? Shades for the chandelier?

I do like the throw pillows that I managed to make with a stray bolt of chambray and a remnant of crinkle cotton.  The bassinet cover is made from my wedding gown.  It is tradition to set it up next to my bed and never put the baby in it.  The receiving blanket draped over the side of the bassinet is a new style for the eden’s bouquet Heirloom Layette Collection.  I hope to have it available for purchase in the next 4-6 weeks.

The photos in the frame definitely need to be changed to sepia, right?  I do like the vintage crochet valance, though the photo here does not do justice.  The dress is an antique wedding gown that I was going to use for a custom gown, but never did.

I do love the neutral color of the walls that changes with the light.  Now don’t go telling me you like the blue color better.

  1. Oh Jen, I love that bassinet! What a dreamy place to lay a wee one to sleep. Gorgeous, gorgeous. I think some rugs would be lovely and cozy and definitely sepia toned or just slightly aged photos in those frames. An antique bench at the end of the bed would be lovely too. I love the ruffles on the pillows. What a beautiful room! I love the new neutral but I gotta say, the blue with the lighter bed was pretty too;)

  2. OOOOOHHHHHH Pretty Bed 🙂

  3. I prefer the neutral color. Definitely a bench at the end of the bed, perhaps a washed burgundy?

  4. OMG that bassinet is to die for – just so lovely! I like the blue, but don’t worry, I think the neutral pallette looks even better! Just need some photos to make it a bit cozier…nothin better than your babies smilin back at ya when you climb in bed at night:) Beautiful room!!

  5. LOVE the new look:)

  6. i love the new colors! we have been working towards a neutral palette, too. i had the same dilemma about our bed. i wanted something different. we decided to store our antique iron bed and look for something else. i have found that i (for now) prefer not to have a headboard at all. i have a very large, wonderfully aged/distressed sign that reads “sweet dreams” that hangs low over my bed and gives a similar look as a headboard. it is in cream and brown. i still have my blue walls, but they will be gone before long. i like the idea of a bench at the foot of the bed and i prefer chandeliers without shades. if the light is too bright you can always get glass beaded bulb covers. they are very cool. also, your bed looks large, most antique or vintage headboards are only full size (a lot come through the store where i work). you could paint the existing one and leave off the foot board for a different look. anyway, i’ve carried on far too long. can’t wait to see what you do!

  7. i just painted my family room that blue. i LOVE it, but it is limiting.

  8. Here’s what jumped into my head…(since you asked!!)–I picture a simple bench with a thick covered cusion on top, with an old rustic rug under the foot of the bed. Maybe some greenery/topiary with cool pots? Perhaps some substantial crown molding would help the balance? I love the new colors, so warm and calming!!! As always…you do such great work!!

  9. I really like that blue but I think for a master bedroom the neutral color is great..my bedroom is dark brown and I love it its so relaxing to be in there. The room looks awesome I think a cozy rug under the bed is all you need.

  10. Hi Jen,
Here are my sleepy thoughts…I love the neutral palette, the sconce slip covers, the shades on the sweet chandelier and the idea of a bench at the foot of your bed…with at least one of your pretty pretty throw pillows on it. The bassinet is just LOVELY what a wonderful idea to use your wedding dress..and the vintage wedding dress is a nice contrast and compliment to the bed. Here is a new thought…I like your window above the bed, but have you thought of using a larger, more square one…perhaps with 9 panes for all of your precious babies?!

    : )

ps I love the ruffle on the baby blanket!

  11. Loving it so far!  Great detail.  My suggestion is to go with the bench idea, get a rug for the foot of the bed and put a bigger wall hanging over the headboard.  Very nice!

  12. Oh…and crown molding.

  13. Jen… What a peaceful room! Love the color. I think you need a bench
and maybe find an old door to turn sideways and use as a headboard, something weathered and interesting. I also agree your pics should be turned sepia or at least add some bohemian secret 🙂

  14. I can’t offer any advice, decorating just isn’t my department. I do love the new wall color. I also like the bed painted darker. The bassinet…what a beautiful idea! Even if you don’t use it. It seems to me that you are headed in a great direction.

  15. Love your new color, as much as the blue was pretty this has a more tranquil romantic feel to it. I would go with a taller or larger headbord, or bigger prints behind. Love the idea of a bench, that would balance off not using a footboard. I would use a dimmer switch on the chandelier, and not use shades. I didn’t know they make the beaded shades. sounds like a good idea also.. I love crown moldings, so if that’s a possiblity it would make a difference also. I would do the molding first before the larger head board, and prints. this way you will have a better idea of dimensions.
If you wanted to add a bit of color into the room, a quilt duvet would be pretty at the foot of the bed.
I’m sure whatever you come up with, it will be beautiful and continue being a part of you.

  16. ok, I was looking over the room again. 😉 I think if you move the chest away from the foot of the bed, add a bench instead maybe a iron one, that would be more open to see the bed. Or a framed foot stool size bench, almost as wide as the bed.. Frame that with a ruffle same shade as the bed..Thick Duvet at the foot of the bed… This bed is to pretty, especially with the new darker stain to get rid of.. Also, if you just do a headboard, think of this.. bed will be lower to the ground, or raise it up on platforms, then you will need a dust ruffle around the frame. Not knowing if you like a high bed or lower bed. Me, I love a higher bed off the floor. Play around with the larger work behind the bed, maybe crown molding and all your other thoughts you had. Rambling on and on, I am… LOL!

  17. Wow! It’s so beautiful and calming. What a gorgeous bed nook!

The only things I would change is more sepia photos in the frame over the bed and I would distress paint the bed to compliment the chest at the foot. Perhaps in a very rich ecru distressed to show the bits of the dark paint?

  18. I just painted my bedroom that color and LOVE it. You have such beautiful taste my dear what ever you decide to do will be perfect as always. I have never seen such a beautiful bassinet. Love your coverings on the lampshades. Love everything you do, thanks for sharing with us.

  19. The bed looks great in the black color. It feels odd giving YOU decorating advice .. lol. The white little dresser has to go …. too small and wide for that space. Also — I liked the shades on the chandelier. Maybe you could make little covers for them to match the lights on the walls? 🙂 I love the birdhouses on the nightstands and the bassient …. beautiful … just beautiful.

  20. Jen, I love it!!! Sara from Sadie Olive is such an inspiration huh? I LOVE everything about her home and she is such a sweetie! can’t wait to see the progress photos! melaine

  21. What a gorgeous bedroom. I have a few thoughts, but I am not at all en expert, nor am I thinking budget-conscious: what about a deep red velvet (short) fainting couch at the foot of the bed? You know, the kind with lots of buttons? It could even be an antique that you have reupholstered; a cream mohair throw blanket draped over the top…Then deep red or brown throws on the bed to tie it in. I am also thinking of a large wreath above your bed with dried field flowers (maybe your children could help you make it). I am thinking there needs to be more variety in shape…Or possibly a picture of you and Levi at the beach in the style of your new pics from Friday Harbor. I see a pic with you two dressed in wispy clothing to the left and the beach, sea and sky in the majority of the picture (you could get your blue back this way). And my final idea that Levi will probably not be too happy about me suggesting: tile with a scroll or vine design on the ceiling in cream or a lighter shade of the walls.

  22. Everything is really pretty! I love what you have done so far..

  23. love the bassinet- just stunning. My suggestion for a headboard? an antique door. That bed does not look like it belongs- I agree The white dresser has to go as well- too small for the space. a bench would be better-or fainting couch- upholstered in raw linen- maybe with a subtle pattern would be fab!

  24. How about this…remove the footboard and add a bench with a thick tufted cushion. Lay a quilt or thick comforter across the bed (close to but not exactly at the foot of the bed). Choose either the quilt/comforter or the bench cushion in a bold color to make a splash of statement (even a deep purple would be fab). I think the birdhouses are a little out of place. Replace them with candles and books and tarnished silver cup “vases” with fresh flowers. Leave the shades off the chandelier but if you don’t already have one, add a dimmer for more romantic lighting. Lean a large, tall mirror against one wall. What about backless/empty frames in a variety of sizes hung at different angles, even overlapping, on part of a wall to add interest. I love to mix new and old so what about these hung over your bed…http://www.crateandbarrel.com/family.aspx?c=1420&f=3134&q=mirror&fromLocation=Search&DIMID=400001&SearchPage=1. I have these hung in my guest room over a tall iron bed and I LOVE how they are hung high enough that they reflect my chandelier. They’re more antiqued than they look in the pictures.

  25. Hi, Jen! Love the room; looks beautiful… Not sure, but you’ve probably heard of UpperCase Living. They might have an expression you could use over the window above your bed. I can’t really tell if the chandelier would block it too much though. Something kind of rustic for a bench. Maybe something with storage? Hmmm…. I haven’t been out much lately so I’m afraid my creative juices are kinda sluggish. Have a wonderful week!

  26. Jen it is so pretty and romantic! I would love a long narrow leggy table at end of bed with loads of rustic frames with all your kids photos! Under that.. old baskets of linens and extra storage for pillows…A set of luxurious rugs on sides of bed and end of bed..Ooolala Love the old window i think you could add one more on top!! i love your idea with that window! this room is wonderful Jen you really inspred me! look at me i left way to much Oops i got carried away! but i love that you asked for ideas i had so much fun dreaming! thank you Jen!

  27. Jen, looks amazing, so lovely!! you have wonderful taste my dear.
    XO

  28. Jen, you are going to absolutely kill me but I have to admit that I love the before pic more. Granted, most of my house is done in the neutral khaki color, this may be why I am gravitating to the blue more. It’s just more softer and soothing. Sorry 🙁 I still love all you have done, no matter what you go with, I know it will always turn out great! 🙂

  29. This is lovely! You might look at Charles P. Rogers beds-they are outstanding reproductions. Love the bassinet cover-such a sweet idea.

  30. Hummmmm…I do love the neutral colors…my master bedroom is almost the same blue….but I do love it so. I love the bassinet, such a sweet addition and reminder of those oh so precious little ones.
    Hope you are doing well.
    Love
    Janet

  31. LOL. you are too funny jen. the room is divine. the neutral color is simmply fabulous and will look different at each hour of the day i’m sure. gorgeous!

  32. Incredibly beautiful.

  33. I think it, and your whole house, is just too-die-for gorgeous. You have a great eye, and I love everything 🙂 The only thing I would do if it were my room, would be to add a few small dashes of color. I’d probably do a robins’s egg blue. Like a few pillows or something. I LOVE the bed a darker color, and all the cream is perfect.

  34. oh wow, totally gorgeous!
i love the blue but actually prefer the neutal makeover for a master bedroom–great call!
    gosh, everything is perfect.
i kinda like the chandilier both ways but maybe with the shades more…
what ever you do, its perfectly dreamy

  35. I actually love the bed. But you said you would like to get an antique one. A lady that bought some junk furniture of mine told me that she goes into antique or junk stores and buys old ristuc doors and puts legs on them for a headboard and footboard. I thought that was a really neat idea. You could always add trimon the top or bottom to make it a little more finished looking. But like Isaid I do like the bed. And my htought is you ahould get a low bench that holds a few baskets in it for the end of the bed. I think the house is amazing! Love it!:)

  36. Wow! I love it so much! We’re getting ready yo redo our bedroom and I’ll be back here for inspiration when we do it. It’s wonderful!

  37. I was thinking maybe add some color by painting the bench a distressed peacock blue with black undertones—then add some tea stained lace pillows on the bench to tie it all together. Just a thought Mr. Fox—lol.

  38. What a pretty room!!! I especially LOVE the bassinet!!!!! Sara
