This is what we have been up to. Painting the ______ room. The plan calls it a club room, which just sounds goofy to me. It is a big room with a fireplace, kid’s toys & the telly. I would like to call it a parlor. Sounds so old fashioned. Like we would all gather there after dinner and sing around the piano, drink tea and nibble dainty scones. So lovely (if not a bit unreal). Levi & the boys scoff at this.
I say in my most dramatic voice: “children, go play in the parlor”.
They all ignore me. It’s like I didn’t say anything at all.
Club room: sounds like you go in there to party, very mancave-ish
Entertainment room: Boring
Den: a place where lions live, dark and dingy
Family room: hmmmm
Living room: already have one of those
Play room: hmmmm
So, what would you call it?
We have a parlor, but it’s a smaller room. Our larger, family gathering room is called the great room.
Great room, Gathering room, family room. We let our three year old name the “other” living room. Which she named for the first few months “the other living room” then decided it’s the “front room”. . .we chose not to point out that the back door is attached to it.
How about “Rumble Room” that would fit for the boys and men?!
Our play room has been dubbed the ‘front room’ lol Its the room in the front of the house. LOL we’re so imaginative.

Rec room…. recreation or wreck…hehe!!!
Hmm…I have a parlor too, but my house is 100 years old and not full of men. That hasn’t always been the case. Allegedly, back in the day, this house and its two neighbors were down by the railroad…one town over…where they were brothels. Yeah, it’s a nice wholesome house now….it still has a parlor…but the piano is in the family room.

You already named it when you said you gather in it. The Gathering Room.
I think words are so fun and key to setting tone. 🙂 What color will the room be? Can you call it by it’s color or theme? Like, the “blue room” or “the log room” or “fireside room.” Or maybe call it what you want it to feel like: the “relaxing room” or “The Hang Out.”
WHat, you guys don’t gather around the piano and sing after dinner? eheheh
We always call whatever the focal point of a room is, ie. playroom, tv room, comp. room, marriage friend room 🙂
What about the “Comfort Room”. There’s nothing more wonderful than feeling comfort in your life, family and friends 🙂
Family room. Its general enough to cover all different purposes…and seems to infer that it belongs to the whole group…no bickering!
“The Gathering Room”, oops I see someone said that. Or “The Hearth Room” … yep, “The Great Room” is good too.

The ‘Lounge’
At our house we call it the toy room. If I ever get my basement finished that will be our rec room, complete with a pool table, pinball machine, dart board and eventually my husband’s arcade cabinet.
The “Elbow Room” 🙂 I like what someone said about a color.. Like you, not sure about the Club room… Creativity word pops to mind, but doesn’t flow good for a room name…
How about “The Sanctuary” – the place the family goes to be together and get away from it all:)
